12 Family Favorite Places for Kids (When It’s Too Cold to Go Outside)

Living in Rhode Island my entire life, our state has taken on a completely different feel for me now that I have two young daughters. Every weekend we try to check out at least one place we’ve never been before. Below are a list of some of our favorites you may enjoy.

1. Providence Athenaeum – Providence
A historic library with plenty to look at for parents. Story time during the week for younger kids, scheduled activities, weekend movie showings (often films based on children’s books).

2. RISD Museum – Providence
Free on Sundays, it is an awesome place to take kids 5+ who are interested in seeing a world class selection of museum artifacts.

3. Kidz Wurld – North Attleboro
Exceptionally clean and fun indoor play place that includes bounce houses, play areas and lots of toys. Great for children 1-5.

4. Launch Trampoline Park – Warwick
Special toddler time on Fridays is good for little ones – the rest of the time is perfect for kids of all ages (and fun for adults too).

5. Warwick Public Library – Warwick
A huge children’s section on the second level, this is a beautiful library that looks brand new. Highlights for the kids: tablets, play areas, reading nooks and even a fish tank.

6. Rock-A-Baby Music Classes – Various
Hands down a toddler favorite. This group puts on original music classes along with their puppet friends.

7. Bellani Maternity – Warwick
Plenty of activities all week long – including dance classes, open gym and more. Something for parents, babies and kids up to about five years old.

8. Bristol Audubon – Bristol
The Audubon is awesome in warmer weather, but in the colder months, they have a small indoor play and exploration center that is excellent to keep your children five and under entertained for at least a couple of hours. Includes indoor pond, fish and much more.

9. Providence Children’s Museum – Providence
Excellent indoor play and learn spaces for all children ages 10 and under. Plenty do with dozens of unique areas.

10. Clayground – East Greenwich
Hands-on fun to paint your own pottery. Our daughter has brought home ballerinas, dogs, cats, hamsters and more – all with her own creative spin on the painting.

11. Mystic Aquarium – Mystic, CT.
A family favorite for years, there is plenty of space to move around for your little one – and the seal show is always a hit.

12. The Breakers Mansion – Newport
An incredible walk through this mansion with keep your child endlessly in awe. Like beaing in a real life castle – it is a perfect afternoon for both kids and parents. Skip the tour if your children are young – they’ll simply enjoy the view.
