One of the nice surprises when I moved to New England was the delightful discovery that there are some very good wines being made here! It’s taken too long to review a local wine, and first on the list is a delicious white blend from Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard called PRANA.
Sakonnet is one of the prettiest places you will find in Rhode Island. If you’ve never taken a tour of the vineyard, you really should. My wife and I did a tour and a tasting there, and while all the Sakonnet whites were interesting – and incredibly fragrant – Prana was the one that really stood out to us.
If you’re looking for a really nice summer wine, this would be a great choice. Prana is a very interesting blend of Vidal Blanc and Gewurtztraminer. It’s got great aromas of roses and tropical fruit, with smooth, crisp flavors of tangerine and pear.
As anyone who knows me will tell you, I am not a white wine guy, but this is a really good wine. If you’ve never been to Sakonnet, it’s definitely worth the drive to Little Compton to try it.
On my five-cork scale based on taste and value, Sakonnet Vineyard’s Prana gets 4 corks!
