There are so many great wines from Spain of late! I have had some excellent Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cava, but no spanish wine I have had comes close to this week’s featured review, the 2001 Balbas Rioja.
This was intense. Fourteen years in the bottle, this is one of those rare wines that makes you sad when it’s gone. Tingling acidity gives way to succulent, dark fruit, with a beautifully long and spicy finish. Without a doubt, the best Spanish wine I’ve ever tasted, and I saw it locally for less than $30!
On my five-cork scale based on taste AND value, the 2001 Balbas Rioja gets an almost perfect score: 4.5 corks!
