This week Rudy (pictured, left) wanted to be included in my Wine Wednesday review. He’s a fan of big, juicy reds.
The 2013 Avalon Cab is a remarkable wine for the money. It reminds me of one of my other favorites, the Bogle Essential Red, in that it tastes like a much more expensive wine. I generally stay away from lower priced Napa Cabs, because come on: how good can an $10 Napa Cabernet be, really? The markup is big for a reason, and I have found you generally have to spend close to $20 for a decent one. So it was with great pleasure that I found an $10 bottle that tasted like a $30 wine.
All the typical Napa Cabernet flavors are here: mocha, blackberry, cherry, raspberry, with a silky smooth vanilla and spice finish. How does Avalon do it at this price point? I have no idea, but I am not complaining.
This is mostly Cabernet, with a little Zinfandel to give it that spice, and the makers say they blended grapes from California’s Napa Valley, Paso Robles, and Lodi to get the taste right. I highly recommend it as a “Best Buy.” It’s also on the award-winning wine list at Tavolo Wine Bar & Tuscan Grille, where our next tasting party will be in January!
Bring a bottle to a party and you’ll be applauded. Just be sure to save a bottle for yourself.
This week’s feature is the 2012 BV Rutherford Cabernet. I love the story of BV, or Beaulieu Vineyard. In 1900, when founder Georges de Latour’s wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it “beau lieu,” or “beautiful place.” The four-acre ranch was purchased, and founded with…MORE
This week’s feature is the 2013 Selbach Riesling. Whenever possible, I like to try a wine from regions that are known for that wine. For example, you can’t beat Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa or Bordeaux. Burgundy and Oregon’s Willamette Valley consistently produce top quality Pinot Noir, and there are no better Rieslings in the world…MORE
